  • Happybird's overview of making friends and the gifting process!

Happybird posted this in another topic, but I felt it deserved it's own topic so it wouldn't get lost.

A good place to start making friends is to send Game Center requests to people who have listed their ID on this thread. As you settle into your own pattern of gifting, you will be able to friend other people through recommendations.

Most of the players who take the time to gift everyday expect their neighbors to do the same, which is fair. Some people gift once a week or some do it a few times a week. The best thing to do is try to match up with people who gift at the same rate that you do. This usually works by trial and error, so don't get discouraged or offended if someone unfriends you. That usually just means that they are gifting at a different rate than you are. And certainly don't be shy about unfriending people yourself! It is very frustrating to send someone gifts for days and weeks on end and never receive one back.

That being said, gifting is not just about getting stuff! It is also about making smurfy friends and supporting each other. You get to help friends collect enough resources for building projects like the castle or Clockwork Smurf. People will often leave messages to skip them for a while if they can't gift, because of things like illness, vacation, or just plain being too busy. Everyone understands that RL gets in the way sometimes.

The other part of gifting is watering. In the main village, if your friends' flower boxes need watered, a watering can will appear above the box. You tap on it and the flowers will regrow for your friend. You can also water palm trees on the island. As of now, there are no tasks to do on the mountain and planet, but you can visit them and have a look around.

A blue ribbon will appear on a friend's village every day. That means Marco Smurf is in that village. When you find him and tap on him, he will give you a gift when you return to your own village. He moves around to the different villages on your friends list and it is easier to find him if you wait until he is visiting a village that has a lot of open space and all the smurfs are actively farming.

A couple more other things: you can only gift once every 23 hours. If you are a daily gifter, once you pick a time, you are kind of stuck with it, unless you skip a day. It is a bit of a pain, so choose your gifting time wisely. Also, it is helpful to pick a special spot in each friend's village and leave your gift in that same spot each time. The server sometimes leaves the tag 'someone' on gifts instead of a name, and this helps clear any confusion about who sent the gift. Also, use the gifting signs and/or your Game Center name to display your gift preferences. That way, your friends know what to leave you. And, of course, look for them in friends' villages so you can leave them their preferred gift. If nothing is indicated, any gift will do. If a friend is 'away' it is good to leave wood, stone, or dye. That way, if gifts get stacked on top of each other, they will still be received.

Wow! I didn't set out to write a book on gifting, just general info and a few tips, lol! Gifting is not as complicated as this makes it look, I swear! Once you get into your pattern, it can be done quickly and efficiently each day. I find it to be fun and very rewarding. Good luck to you, and I am sending you a friend request

Thank you, tzr1877 for this topic! I would never look at it as I am a long-term player and know everything about gifting.
Happybird, it's so excellently written, that I would like at least to "like" it, but I can't.

Thank you, tzr and Bublik! 😊 Someone wanted to make SV friends and wasn't sure what gifting was all about. I remember when I first starting gifting, I had a lot of questions and was lucky enough to get advice from the old forum....now all that information is gone. Hopefully, this will be helpful for other new players!

What a great guide on what gifting is about. Good thing you saved it tzr! It should be in the opening post of searching friends. And maybe even in the gifting thread as well. (And like Bublik I'd like to credit Happy but can't because she didn't create this post). Really great job Happy!!

Gifting can really take a long time, if your friend list is too long. Having neighbour that gift everyday helps a lot when you need resources.

I'm so glad my novice question produced this excellent answer from happybird and in the process I've made some friends I have one more question how do you get the gift needed into your village name?

In iOS 7, Apple changed how you edit your GC name. You have to go into the device settings, find GC (on the left, in the group with iTunes and photos) and log in with your Apple password. Then, you can change your name in the GC profile.

I really preferred the way it was in iOS 6- you could do everything from inside the GC app. The process is the same, it is just in a different place. I don't like change, lol!

Happy to add her .... I did not know how to add friends when I first started and I really don't like Facebook so I missed out on loads of inspiration and fun in the early days.

That's so true about different gifting rates. I play everyday therefore I gift and water plants everyday. Not all my friends play everyday and I usually end up unfriending them. I have three friends right now who haven't even updated yet and I only added them because they posted about wanting friends for gifting reasons. I usually give people 2 weeks before unfriending. It's too bad though, one particular friend could have been getting a bolt from me everyday.

I haven't looked at this in a long time and realized it needs a little update. There has been a big change to gifting! After years of requests from forum members, Beeline indulged us and changed when you can gift!! Yay! Gifting now resets at midnight in all villages. You can now send your gifts any time you like, with no worries about getting locked into a certain gifting time (like described in the original post). This was a super improvement that makes gifting a lot more fun and convenient.

Also, the links to the Big Giant Lists didn't make it into this thread. The Big Giant Lists are where you can post and find Game Center IDs or Facebook information in order to make new friends. Here are links to those threads:
